The China Travels: The Temple of Heaven

Here we go... Temple of Heaven, in Beijing!

General Info

also called Tian Tan

2 kilometres away from the Forbidden City.

The place where the dynastic rulers in China used to worship the heaven.

Five times as big as the Forbidden City! Wow! 273 hectares, to be exact.

Based on "round Heaven and square Earth". There is a round North wall, and a square South wall.

The outer wall is 6416 metres long, and the inner wall is 3292 metres long.

The colours and design are representative of Chinese traditional architecture.

Danbi Bridge: 360 metres long. The north end is 4 metres above the ground while the south end is only one... this represents "the step upward toward heaven". The central path was reserved for divine gods, the path on the left was reserved for the emperor, and the path on the right was used by court officials.

Echo Wall: if one speaks against the wall at one end, the other can hear his voice at the other end.

9 Dragon Cypress: 300 year old cypress tree whose branches look like 9 dragons.

Heart of Heavenly Stone: The centre of the top tier of a circular mound, around it there are 9 circles, each with 9 stones. This place echos too.

Sweet Spring Well: the water tastes sweet. It is used in soups for sacrificial rituals.

Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest: pillars: 4 in inner circle, representing the 4 seasons. 12 in the middle circle, representing the 12 months. 12 in the outer circle, repersenting the 12 time periods (Chinese years, perhaps?). The very centre repersents the absolute power of the emperor.
