The China Travels: The Great Wall

Well well, here we are at the Great Wall. I'm going to write what I know... mostly I'll write about the sections of the wall that are near Beijing for now, but some things apply to the whole darn thing.

General Info

Construction started in 7th century B.C.

It's the only man-made thing distiguishable with the naked eye from the moon

It started as many separate walls, and were joined together in 221 B.C., and then extended to more than 5000 kilometres.

In 1368 the Ming Dynasty started renovations that lasted 200 years to complete.

Now, it's over 6000 kilometres

The wall extends from the Jiayu Pass in Gansu Province in the west, to the mouth of the Yalu River in Lianning Province in the east.

Near Beijing is the Ming dynasty wall.

The Badaling Section

North-West of Beijing.

Built at the beginning of the Ming Dynasty in the 14th century.

7.8 metres high, 5.8 metres wide

Light it up at night

In a mountainous area... very mountainous! Stunning scenery of the wall twisting over the hills

Juyogguan (Pass of Conscripted Labourers)

10 kilometres south of Badaling

Built in an 18.5 kilometre valley

Cloud Terrace, built in 1345, was originally the base of a pagoda

Arched gate of terrace and walls are decorated with carvings of elephants, lions, birds, etc... and charm in 6 languages; Sanskrit, Tibetan, PhatsPa (Mangolian), Uygur, West Xia, and Han.

And so, that's what I know so far about the Great Wall, but I *will* be adding more later!
