The J-Files: Back in Canada

Thursday May 21, 1998: 1:10am

Well, I betcha thought you were rid of me. Well, NO SUCH LUCK BUCKO! A-hahaha. Ok, let's get serious here. I mean, it's 1:10am, and I still have a CS assignment to do. But, it's about time I get this last and final entry in, to complete up the journal. This entry is different from all the other ones in a few respects: first of all, it's not being written in Japan. Secondly, I'm writing it directly onto the webpage, as opposed to writing it down into my journal, and then transferring it to the computer. Yeah, this is a 'webpage special', or whatever. But, enough administravia! Let's get on with it!

Now, where do I start??? I made it back OK, with all my luggage (surprise surprise!). Spent my first week really busy with my sis in Toronto, and the cottage. Saw lots of relatives. Caught up on some sleep. Did some good running. Wow, the weather has been *incredible* *incredible* *incredible*. Saw so many movies, I can't even count. uhhhh, I ATE THICK-ASS CRUST PIZZA! Kraft Dinner! Nachos! You name it, I've eaten it. Ok, not meat, but y'know.

I got up to Waterloo about 5 days before classes started. Painted my room purple and green and BOY do I ever love it! Got a new carpet, lamp, bookshelf, etc... looks totally different. Unpacked. Unpacked. Went through all the stuff I had in storage here and almost had a heart attack... SO MUCH CRAP! I dno't really know where to put it all!

Found out that my email/webpage/math account had been erased as of May 22nd. All my files, just gone. If you tried to access my webpage for the 3 or 4 weeks following that (well, until 2 days ago actually), there woulda been nothing there. Talk about annoying. But, it's all fixed now.

Classes and stuff are great, it's neat to be back. It's great to see my friends again. Had a 'surprise' welcome party (that I knew about) which was lots of fun. I've seen Dave and Jason, and Simon's in my C&O 230 class, and I've bumped into Martin and Geoff and Go...

I've gotten really behind in my email (as a result of my account being erased... no more emails... then when it got put back up, I was lazy... y'know). Also with the webpage. But I'm keeping up so far with the classes, because they're really neat! Cool, I can't believe I like them all, and I like the work. But hush, dont' tell anybody!

And on the exciting side of things, my parents have been 'evacuated' from Jakarta, where everything is in chaos from the riots and protests. It sounds just crazy. Fires everywhere. Looting. 500 deaths. No transportation. No sanitation. Mom and Dad are holing up in Malaysia and Singapore for a bit, but who knows if they can go back or what. Actaully, I just heard about 2 hours ago that Soeharto *resigned*, but I have yet to see it for myself on the news. I should go do that once I'm finished typing this up, I guess.

Ooo, and this weekend (Victoria Day weekend, for you non-Canadians... it was a 3-day holiday, woo hoo!) I went back to the cottage and ooooh, I love it there! And on Monday Jon and I ran our first half-marathon (21 kms! 13 miles!), which was tiring, but neat. And now, I should really get to talking about Japan, or else I'm going to get hate mail.

Ok so everything I was worrying about before I left (about being bored, or about missing it so much, or about not being able to adjust, etc) were completely unfounded. I know this sounds horrible, but I haven't had TIME to miss the place yet! I've just been really really really busy, and so I don't have time to think about it. I certainly don't have time to be bored. And I haven't had one single problem adjusting back to student life it seems! Well, except that I'm currently listening to Japanese pop... uhhhuhhh...

I haven't even emailed/written anyone in Japan yet. Now *that* is horrible. I really should, but as I said, I'm lazy. But that's no excuse, I should really get off my butt and get typing.

I suppose one thing I should mention is the question "How was Japan?". I HATE THAT QUESTION. I mean, what am I supposed to answer to such a general question? I say "Japan? Oh, it was great!", to which I get "Oh yeah? Great?", "Yeah!". So what? Get some originality people!

Well, I'm going to finish this off here. what a useless entry, if you ask me. Maybe I'll have more to say later, and I'll just append it onto the end here. Yeah. But until then, I'll be eating pizza. And planning that trip to China. Keep your eyes open for the C-Files (???? doubt I'll call it that!) coming soon to a webpage near you... ta
